Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small teenager when her father who was employed as the carnival barker, passed away. Her mother was forced to perform tasks such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth went to school and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. She quit school in just two years in order to study acting. This was not an easy path to take. While she was offered an interview as a hat check girl in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine, no theatre jobs came her way. After a brief time as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home and quit the job she was working in. She made the ends meet by working as an usherette throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She graduated with a degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
